Battle of the “better Christian”: Lady Gaga versus Mike Pence

Lady Gaga made me question who is the “better Christian” when she recently went on a public tirade against Vice President Mike Pence while she performed in Las Vegas on January 19, 2019, stating he was the “worst representation” of Christianity.

She stopped playing during a song to talk to the audience about how Mike Pence’s wife works at a Christian school that does not admit gay students. She yelled into her microphone and flared her arms around, reminding me of women I had seen speak at Women’s March.

“And to Mike Pence, who thinks it’s acceptable that his wife works at a school that bans LGBTQ, you are wrong,” she said. “You say we should not discriminate against Christianity; you are the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian. I am a Christian woman and what I do know about Christianity is that we bear no prejudice and everybody is welcome. So you can take all that disgrace Mr. Pence and you can look yourself in the mirror and you’ll find it right there.”

What is odd is how Lady Gaga considers Pence to be the worst representation of Christianity, yet puts herself on a pedestal in representing the religion, and even speaks on behalf of all Christians. Has she forgotten about the murderous, violent and sex-enthused content she has produced that has garnered millions of views, and influenced millions of people, all over the world?

For example, in her 2009 music video for the song “Paparazzi,” there is a scene where she pours poison in a drink that she hands to her boyfriend. She made the act seem “cute and stylish” as she waited for him to die, and even made being arrested appear glamorous.

A dance scene featuring a dead woman that Lady Gaga poisoned in the music video “Telephone” (2010).

In her 2010 music video for the song “Telephone,” featuring Beyonce, she glorified murder even more by poisoning food served at a diner. The video showcased a scene where everyone in the diner, including a dog, falls over dead. The next scene shows Lady Gaga, Beyonce and a team of dancers dancing with a dead woman in front of the camera. Is that a “Christian” work of art?

In her music video for the song “John Wayne,” released in 2017, Gaga promotes drunk driving, hit and run, littering and recklessly shooting guns. She even points a revolver at a man while he is driving. A final scene showcased her being shot and falling dead on a grass lawn in front of a home in a suburban neighborhood. (Not surprisingly, Lady Gaga later heavily challenged gun access in 2018 after the Parkland, Florida shooting, yet failed to criticize her own glorification of guns).

There is plenty more to analyze in regards to Lady Gaga’s behavior clashing with the concept of an ideal “Christian,” but I’ll just leave it there. Ultimately I have determined Lady Gaga to be a far worse representation of Christianity than Mike Pence.

I do not approve of everything Pence does, but in this case I have to call out Lady Gaga for thinking she is the “better” representation of Christianity.
