Hello! My name is Lauren Ell. I am a new mom who is a registered Republican and have identified as atheist for nearly 15 years.
I’ve been watching a lot of Youtube videos from mothers about newborn care and product recommendations. I even attended an online conference that I randomly learned about, called MomCon, to see the kinds of topics are discussed by moms.
One thing I’ve noticed since journeying through the online mom community is that the majority of outspoken mothers appear to be Christian. They will often mention their experiences of taking their children to church and will say, “Praise the Lord.” The MomCon online conference I attended ended up being more about mothers’ relationship with Jesus, which I later saw was mentioned in the fine print (I wondered why many of the speakers constantly referenced to Jesus LOL!).
I really do not have a problem with many mothers being outspoken Christians. I’m thankful they even put up content to help new mothers like myself. I did question, however, is there an atheist mom presence? I searched “atheist mom” on Google and the only big name that really came up was a woman known as Godless Mom. After that there were articles that discussed mothers who were atheist, but no specific names.
This has led me to decide to promote myself as an atheist mother, though I am not sure how involved in the “atheist” aspect I will be. I am much different than most atheists I encounter. I am fairly lenient on Christianity, and have even called myself a “Christian atheist” at times, primarily because my values did not change much when I became atheist at 18 years old. I am really the same person I was when I was Christian (let’s just say I was a very moderate Christian). I am also not focused on discussing religion 24/7, I actually take more interest in health, nutrition, diet, healthy lifestyle, etc. On a final note, I am an outspoken Republican and am founder and president of the organization Republican Atheists.
